Privacy Policy

How OwnNotes handles your data: notes stay on your Nextcloud, password in system storage, crash reports without note content.

OwnNotes is a client for the Notes app on your Nextcloud server (package com.nkshub.nextcloudnotes, Android and iOS). Notes are Markdown files on a server you choose. The app publisher, NKS Hub, has no access to them: the phone talks directly to your server.

Your Nextcloud server

You enter the server address yourself. Note content goes only between the phone and that server, and the app publisher does not collect it. How the server handles the data is up to its operator. If it is somebody else's server, their terms apply.

Sign-in and data on the phone

Sign-in uses Nextcloud Login Flow v2. The app password is kept in the phone's secure storage, Android Keystore or Apple Keychain. The local copy of your notes lives in the app's database on the phone.

Crash and error reports

The app sends crash and error reports to the publisher's own Sentry instance (sentry.nks-garage.cz). A report contains the stack trace and the error type. URLs are cut to scheme://host, credentials are removed, and a random installation id is attached. A report contains no note text, no titles and no address of your server.

Usage statistics

Anonymous usage statistics go to the publisher's own Rybbit instance. What is sent is screen names (/, /note, /login, /recovery) and an app-open event, with the random installation id. Rybbit derives an approximate location from the IP address.

Transfer and sharing

Crash reports and statistics are encrypted in transit and are not shared with third parties.

What the app does not do

  • No advertising.
  • No in-app purchases.
  • No selling of data.

App lock and screenshots

App lock (fingerprint, face or the phone PIN) and screenshot blocking are optional phone features. Nothing is sent because of them.

Deleting and exporting data

Removing an account in the app deletes that account's local data. Before that, the app warns you about notes that have not been uploaded yet. Notes on the server are the business of its operator. You can export all your notes from the app as a zip.
